UCL LAST 16 1ST LEG REPORT

The UEFA Champions League Round of 16 kicked off with a dramatic set of first-leg fixtures on Tuesday, 10 March and Wednesday, 11 March 2026, producing goals, shocks, and dominant performances across Europe.

Tuesday’s action began with a surprise result in Istanbul as Galatasaray edged Liverpool 1–0. The Turkish side produced a disciplined defensive display and capitalised on a key opportunity to take a narrow advantage into the second leg. Meanwhile in Italy, Bayern Munich delivered one of the performances of the round, thrashing Atalanta 6–1 away from home to place one foot firmly in the quarterfinals.

In England, Newcastle United battled to a 1–1 draw with Barcelona at St James’ Park. The Magpies held their own against the Spanish giants, ensuring the tie remains evenly poised heading into the return leg in Spain. The final game on Tuesday saw Atletico Madrid overwhelm Tottenham Hotspur 5–2 in Madrid, with the Spanish side producing a ruthless attacking display that leaves Spurs with a huge deficit to overturn.

Wednesday night produced even more drama. Arsenal managed to rescue a 1–1 draw away to Bayer Leverkusen, with a late equaliser keeping their hopes alive ahead of the second leg in London. In Norway, Bodo/Glimt continued their remarkable European run with a stunning 3–0 victory over Sporting CP, putting the Norwegian champions in a commanding position in the tie.

The biggest headline result came in Paris, where defending champions Paris Saint-Germain defeated Chelsea 5–2 in an entertaining contest, taking a strong advantage into the return leg at Stamford Bridge.

Another major clash took place at the Santiago Bernabéu, where Real Madrid stunned Manchester City with a 3–0 victory. Federico Valverde scored a sensational first-half hat-trick, leaving Pep Guardiola’s side with a mountain to climb in the second leg.

Overall, the first legs produced plenty of goals and left several ties delicately balanced, although Bayern Munich, Atlético Madrid, PSG, and Real Madrid already appear well-placed to reach the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Premier League clubs endured a disappointing week, with none of them managing to secure a first-leg victory.
