Easy Wins for Springboks, Tougher Games Await

The Springboks, reigning World Champions, claimed their third consecutive victory on the Incoming Tour by beating Georgia 55-10 in front of a packed crowd at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday night.

Ten players were changed from the team that beat Italy, with three making their first start in the front row. Even with a new lineup, South Africa easily beat Georgia, scoring nine tries to one.

The Van der Merwe surname appeared four times on the scoreboard, with debutants Marnus and Edwill each scoring twice. Boan Venter, who was also making his debut, scored a try. He joined Canan Moodie, Kurt- Lee Arendse, Damian Willemse, and Handré Pollard in this achievement.

Georgia scored first through Vano Karkadze and put up a strong, physical fight. However, the Springboks quickly took control and finished the game with a comfortable win, delighting the Mbombela crowd.

With the Rugby Championship coming up, Coach Rassie Erasmus says he will stop experimenting and pick his strongest team to defend the title. The first match against the Wallabies will be important for setting the tone of the tournament.

“We’ll name 36 guys on Tuesday for the Australia series, and within that squad, there’ll be one or two guys that we experiment with, but the bulk of that squad will be experienced players who are suited to the way we want to play,” he said.

“The nice thing is that we’ve got a group of 48 players or so that we’ve used this year, and there are quite a couple that we’d also like to give opportunities to like Jaden (Hendrikse), Jordan (Hendrikse), Quan Horn, Renzo (du Plessis).

“But this was a series where we wanted to experiment a little bit so getting the scorelines we did is pretty satisfying. But the Rugby Championship is definitely a step up.”

South Africa sets the standard in international rugby and is the team everyone wants to beat. Fans are lucky to have such talented players and should keep supporting them.

The Springboks return to action on 16 August at Ellis Park when they meet Australia in the Castle Lager Rugby Championship.
