Rugby Championship Wrap: Springboks and Pumas Secure Big Wins

South Africa and Argentina both bounced back in style on Match-day Two of the Rugby Championship 2025. The Springboks defeated Australia 30-22 at DHL Stadium, while the Pumas shocked New Zealand 29-23 for their first-ever win against the All Blacks on home soil.

The Boks entered the clash under pressure after their shock defeat to the Wallabies the week before, where they blew a 22-0 lead to lose 38-22. Although South Africa didn’t produce the emphatic “Boklash” many fans were expecting, they fought hard against a spirited Australia side. The Wallabies made life tough but couldn’t secure a losing bonus point. With this win, Rassie Erasmus’ men now turn their focus to two crucial games against the All Blacks in Auckland.

Meanwhile in Buenos Aires, Argentina stunned world rugby by beating New Zealand on home turf for the first time in history. Despite being outscored three tries to two, Santiago Carreras kept the scoreboard ticking with three second-half penalties that sealed a famous 29-23 victory. This result came just a week after the Pumas lost 41-24 in Córdoba, showing their remarkable resilience.

After two rounds, all four teams have one win and one loss. Thanks to Damian McKenzie’s late penalty earning a bonus point, New Zealand still tops the Rugby Championship table. The tournament will take a short break before returning on 6 September. Fans can look forward to Argentina facing Australia in Sydney, while the Springboks and All Blacks will lock horns in a rematch of the Rugby World Cup final.

The MTN 8 Cup semi-finals delivered drama and history as Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch FC secured their places in the final.

At the Peter Mokaba Stadium, Stellenbosch held Sekhukhune United to a 1-1 draw in the second leg. With their 2-0 victory in the first leg, Stellies progressed 3-1 on aggregate, making their first MTN 8 final appearance.

Orlando Pirates, the defending champions, faced a tense battle against Mamelodi Sundowns. After a 0-0 draw in the first leg, Sundowns took the lead in the 16th minute through Iqraam Rayners. Pirates hit back in the 73rd minute when Sebelebele pounced on a loose ball to level the score. With the game ending 1-1 on the night and 1-1 on aggregate, penalties decided the outcome.

Sundowns faltered, missing their opening two spot-kicks, while Pirates were clinical. Tshegofatso Mabasa calmly slotted the winning penalty, handing the Buccaneers a 4-1 shootout win. Pirates now head to their fourth consecutive MTN 8 final, where they will clash with Stellenbosch in what promises to be a thrilling contest.
