MERCEDES SET THE PACE FOR 2026
The 2026 Australian Grand Prix kicked off the new Formula One season in Melbourne, and honestly, it was a pretty chaotic but entertaining way to start the year. Held at the famous Albert Park Circuit, the race had a bit of everything — drama before the lights even went out, plenty of overtaking, and a dominant performance from Mercedes.
Even before the race began, things were already going wrong for a few drivers. Local favourite Oscar Piastri crashed before the start after an unexpected surge in his McLaren, meaning he did not even get to take the grid for his home race. On top of that, Audi driver Nico Hülkenberg also failed to start due to technical issues, leaving only 20 cars to line up when the race finally began.
When the lights went out, pole-sitter George Russell initially lost the lead to Charles Leclerc at the first corner. For the first few laps the pair went wheel-to-wheel, giving fans a proper fight for the lead. Meanwhile, Russell’s teammate Kimi Antonelli, who started second, dropped down the order early on after a tricky opening lap.
The race settled into a strategic battle after that. Mercedes made a smart call with their pit strategy, and Russell managed to regain control of the race. Once he got back into the lead, he looked comfortable and pulled away from the Ferraris. By the end of the 58-lap race, Russell crossed the line first to take the win and give Mercedes the perfect start to the 2026 season.
Even better for the team, Antonelli recovered brilliantly during the race and finished second, giving Mercedes a clean 1–2 finish. Leclerc completed the podium in third, while his Ferrari teammate Lewis Hamilton finished just behind him in fourth. Reigning champion Lando Norris came home in fifth, and Max Verstappen produced one of the drives of the day by climbing from 20th on the grid to finish sixth.
There were a few retirements and incidents during the race, including a mechanical failure for rookie Isack Hadjar, which brought out a virtual safety car early on. Combined with the brand-new technical regulations for 2026, the race felt a little unpredictable and chaotic at times.
Overall, the 2026 Australian Grand Prix was a wild season opener. Mercedes looked seriously quick, Russell grabbed the championship lead straight away, and if the rest of the season is anything like this race, Formula One fans are in for a very entertaining year.
Next up is CHINA, and we can look forward to the first SPRINT WEEKEND of the calendar.
