KING KIMI MAKES HISTORY IN CHINA
The 2026 Chinese Grand Prix at the Shanghai International Circuit delivered a landmark moment in Formula One as Kimi Antonelli secured his maiden victory.
The 19-year-old Mercedes driver produced a composed and confident performance to win the 2026 Chinese Grand Prix, leading home teammate George Russell for a dominant Mercedes one-two finish.
Antonelli’s achievement was historic on several levels. The young Italian started the race from pole position after becoming the youngest pole-sitter in Formula One history during qualifying, surpassing the previous record held by Sebastian Vettel. From the moment the lights went out, Antonelli showed remarkable maturity, maintaining control of the race despite constant pressure from Russell behind him.
Throughout the race, the Mercedes rookie demonstrated exceptional pace and calm decision-making, managing his tyres well and responding confidently to strategic calls from the team. Even when a small mistake late in the race slightly reduced his advantage, Antonelli remained composed and quickly regained control to secure the victory.
The triumph also carried historic significance for Italian motorsport. Antonelli became the first Italian driver to win a Formula One Grand Prix in two decades, highlighting the arrival of a new star in the sport. His victory also continued Mercedes’ strong start to the season following their one-two finish at the season-opening race in Australia.
Behind the Mercedes duo, Lewis Hamilton finished third to claim his first podium for Scuderia Ferrari, while Charles Leclerc took fourth.
However, the day belonged to Antonelli. His first victory signalled the arrival of one of the sport’s most exciting young talents and potentially the beginning of a remarkable career at the top of motorsport.
F1 heads over to Japan on March 27th. Everyone will be looking forward to the incredible Suzuka Circuit and eager to see how the likes of McLaren and Red Bull bounce back.
