AND THE STATES GO MARCHING ON
The United States secured a place in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with an impressive 2-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina in Santa Clara.
Mauricio Pochettino’s team-controlled possession for much of the match and broke through just before half-time, when Folarin Balogun finished calmly after sustained pressure. Balogun had earlier thought he had scored, but VAR ruled the goal offside.
The contest took another twist in the second half when Balogun was sent off, forcing the Americans to defend with ten men. Rather than retreat, the hosts showed tremendous resilience, with goalkeeper Matt Freese and captain Tim Ream leading a disciplined defensive display. Malik Tillman wrapped up the victory in the 82nd minute with a superb free-kick, ensuring the USA advanced comfortably.
The win sets up an exciting Round of 16 match against Belgium, but Balogun’s suspension is a major concern as the Americans pursue a quarter-final spot.
