AL AHLY AND OUT
Egyptian giants Al Ahly SC will miss the CAF Champions League for the first time since 2003 after a disappointing domestic campaign saw them finish third in the Egyptian Premier League standings.
The record African champions, who have dominated continental football for over two decades, did not secure one of the league’s two qualification spots and will instead compete in the CAF Confederation Cup next season.
The outcome marks the end of one of African football’s most remarkable streaks, with Al Ahly having taken part in every CAF Champions League edition since 2004. During that period, the Cairo club cemented its status as the continent’s most successful side, winning multiple continental crowns and regularly reaching the latter stages of the competition.
Missing out on qualification has sent shockwaves through African football and sparked serious questions about the club’s direction after a disappointing season without major silverware. Zamalek SC and runners-up Pyramids FC will represent Egypt in next season’s CAF Champions League.
