Bet on the Green!

Drama, tension, incredible golf, camaraderie, and sportsmanship will be served up at the 44th Ryder Cup.

Every two years, 24 of the best European and US golfers go head-to-head in a team match play tournament. This year, holders Team USA will attempt to beat the Europeans on home soil for the first time since 1993.

The tournament winning math is simple, each of the 28 matches is worth one point (in the situation of a tie, each side takes a half-point), to win a team needs to get to 14.5 points.

What is match play golf? It is where each golfer competes against a single opponent, rather than competing against the field (as is typically the case). Another key feature of match play: par is irrelevant. The only thing that matters is how you score relative to your opponent. Make a 7 when your opponent makes an 8? You win the hole! Make a 3 when your opponent makes a 2? You lose the hole!

Before the action starts, here’s our short list of the most memorable moments in the tournament’s history.

The Miracle of Medinah

Down 10-4 with two Saturday afternoon matches to play, European’s Sergio Garcia and Luke Donald secured a point. Ian Poulter, paired with Rory McIlroy, birdied five of the last six holes to reduce the deficit to 10-6. In the singles, inspired by the late Ballesteros, Europe claimed 8.5 points to complete the stunning comeback. German Martin Kaymer holed the winning putt on the 18th hole, sealing a remarkable comeback victory.

War by the Shore

Kiawah Island Golf Resort, 1991, marked a turning point in the competition’s attitude and rivalry. Controversies, injuries, and gamesmanship surrounded the event, culminating in a decisive putt by Hale Irwin to secure victory for the US.

Justin Leonard Rattles Brookline

Entering Sunday, the US faced a 10-6 deficit entering Sunday. The Americans made a sensational comeback, winning the first six matches before Justin Leonard’s monster putt secured a crucial half-point, ensuring the cup remained in the US.

Who is Taking the Field?

World number one, Scottie Schiffler made his Ryder Cup debut in 2021, a year after earning his tournament card. He started 2022 ranked 13th and without a victory on the PGA Tour but leads the American team in Rome ranked number one after four PGA title wins, including the Masters.

He is joined by three rookies – Wyndham Clark (3), Brian Harman (23) and Max Homa (9) – with newcomer Sam Burns (9) joining the team as team captain Zach Johnson’s pick.

European captain Luke Donald has included Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg who four months ago was playing college golf and becomes the first Ryder Cup player to compete before playing in a major championship.

Viktor Hovland, leading the PGA season’s rankings after back-to-back wins, is hitting form at the right time and leads the European charge in Rome. He is joined by four rookies – Robert MacIntyre, Sepp Straka, Nicolai Hojgaard – and veterans Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy.

People who know golf say both teams look evenly matched, which promises 3 days of competitive golf. The Ryder Cup is a fiercely contested tournament, and the competition is always close.
