It’s hard to believe that the 2023 English Premier League’s Golden Glove winner is currently out of contract. But this is the reality, and the Spaniard will have some huge decisions to make before the domestic season kicks off in August.

It is shocking that Manchester United have allowed the amazing shot stopper, who is on honeymoon after marrying his long-time partner, with no decision made on his future at the club. This is a sign of poor administration from the Red Devils.

David was brought in from Atletico Madrid by Sir Alex Ferguson for a considerably high fee (for a teenager). The iconic manager saw something in the lanky lad and after a shaky start, he grew into one of the top keepers in the world. De Gea hasn’t been known for his ability to play out from the back, but his cat-like reflexes and jaw dropping saves are second to none.

The disadvantages of being that good over his 12 years stay – and arguably one of the club’s greatest servants – meant the spotlight was always on him, and he was consistently under the microscope.

That scrutiny has worked against the Spaniard. His errors have been emphasized and analysed – some reports suggest that Erik Ten Hag was not impressed with specific errors – and all the good was overlooked.

Negotiations with De Gea were dependant on the Spaniard being willing to take a pay cut to stay in Manchester. However, Ten Hag’s overall stance shifted after De Gea was at fault for goals conceded against Sevilla, West Ham and Manchester City in the FA Cup final. United have since contacted Andre Onana of Inter Milan. Ten Hag has worked with the charismatic keeper during his time at Ajax and would love to bring him in.

There will be a host of clubs eager to sign De Gea and some lucrative deals from clubs in the Saudi Arabian league are already on the table. It’s no lie that much of the United fanbase is split between moving away from David or sticking with him. It’s all going to come down to what he decides is best for his future. If he’s already played his last game for the club – it’s terrible from United to allow it to come down this path.

Dean Henderson looks set to leave Old Trafford. It will be an interesting few weeks regarding who lines up between the sticks for United next season.
