The first international break of 2023 is here and we’re going to look at two big games in both hemispheres.
South Africa vs Liberia
It’s hard to believe that both nations last played each other 21 years ago. Bafana won the first match 2-1 at home in December 2000 followed by a 1-1 draw away from home in June 2001. Lots has happened since and now in 2023, they meet again with a mammoth 83 ranking places between them.
The prospect of pouring your heart and soul into international football can be an excruciating affair for the average South African supporter. While this may have been true until very recently, Hugo Broos has improved Bafana’s fortunes and revived the hopes of their fans. South Africa is unbeaten in their last seven games and have scored in each of the last six. Broos has called up a 23-man squad for this month’s double-header, including in-form Sundowns striker Cassius Mailula and Pirates top-scorer Monnapule Saleng.
The Liberians have won one of their last eight games, scoring twice. This will be a tough assignment for the Lone Stars. A victory is not impossible, but a draw will be a great result. South Africa is aiming to qualify for the AFCON for the first time since 2019 and will go for the kill.
Prediction
SA Win 2-0
England vs Ukraine
The Three Lions got their Euro campaign off to a flyer with a solid win over Italy. It was a game that saw the talismanic Harry Kane pass Wayne Rooney to become the nation’s top goal scorer. Kane will be hungry for more goals, but all eyes will be on the 19-year-old Jude Bellingham. A versatile midfielder, and one of the soundest players in the Bundesliga, the Dortmund star’s performance in an England shirt has meant talk of a big money transfer is growing louder.
This is not the Ukraine of Shevchenko, Rebrov and Yarmolenko. The Blue and Yellows will look to skipper Oleksandr Zinchenko to break English hearts. The Arsenal defender has been instrumental in the Gunners title challenging season. Ukraine will need him to be the driving force if they are to get something at Wembley. Ukraine caused a massive upset when they beat England 1-0 in the 2016 Euros. Yet, this time around, it won’t be so easy for the war-torn country.
Prediction
England win 3-0
