Manchester – United vs City
United secured their passage to the Carabao Cup semi-final with a comfortable 3-0 win over Charlton. On the south coast, Southampton dumped City out of the Cup with a 2-0 win. A victory few could have foreseen. Of course, with one eye on this weekend’s derby, Ten Hag and Guardiola rested their stars so both teams should be fresh for Saturdays early kick-off. Back in October (at the Etihad) it was City with Erling Haaland and Phil Foden grabbing hat tricks in a 6 – 3 rout. This is a different United though. Ten Hag has galvanised his team and their good form since the World Cup has pushed them into the Champions League spots in the League. Marcus Rashford has rediscovered his form and the club has scored 15 in the last 7. But keeping Haaland quiet is a different, and more, difficult challenge for the Red Devils. Pep will be looking to avoid complacency from his stars. With Arsenal looking all but unstoppable, he knows 3 points are non-negotiable. The Citizens are without the injured Ruben Diaz, but such is the depth of talent available to him Guardiola can call on John Stones, Manuel Akanji or Aymeric Laporte to fill in. United are a better team this time around, but City should get the job done.
North London – Tottenham vs Arsenal
The North London Derby brings the curtain down on the weekends football. White Hart Lane is the setting for a Sunday showdown and it’s the age-old rival, Arsenal. Arsenal’s faith in Mikel Arteta is paying off. The Gunners are flying high, with the one loss to Man United. They’ve established a five-point lead over Man City and will look to extend or maintain that gap. They are now the fifth club in Premier League’s history to take 43 points from their first 16 games. Arteta’s men are the second-highest goal scorers, despite having just one player (Gabriel Martinelli) in the list of top ten scorers. Two wins in their last two is the form Antonio Conte demands from his team. Spurs have struggled with consistency, and this has led to them having the eighth-worst defence (conceding 25 goals). But, talisman, Harry Kane is in form and Conte will hope he can add to his 15 goals. The Spurs faithful will be urging Kane to continue his goalscoring form and a home game against Arsenal is the perfect timing for him to match Jimmy Greaves record club tally. Spurs will need the twelfth man to be loud on the day in an attempt not to lose any further ground in the top-four race.
