TWIGA STARS STUN BANYANA
Banyana Banyana’s defence of their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title suffered a major setback after a shock 2-1 defeat to Tanzania in their Group B opener in Casablanca.
Ranked well below the reigning African champions, Tanzania claimed their first-ever WAFCON victory thanks to a dramatic late winner from Hasnath Ubamba in the 87th minute.
Twiga Stars deservedly took a first-half lead through Diana Msewa before South Africa equalised just before the break, with Bambanani Mbane heading home.
Banyana dominated possession after halftime but struggled to break down Tanzania’s disciplined defence, leaving themselves exposed to counterattacks. Tanzania seized one of those chances when Ubamba’s superb solo effort stunned the defending champions and sealed a famous three points.
The defeat leaves coach Desiree Ellis and her side under immediate pressure, with their remaining group matches now taking on added importance.
Banyana must quickly regroup if they are to keep their hopes of retaining the continental crown alive after an opening result few would have predicted.
