SPRINGBOKS LOOKING GOOD
The Springboks kicked off their 2026 international campaign with a high-scoring 80-31 win over the Barbarians on Saturday, continuing their strong start to the international season with a convincing victory in front of a packed crowd.
From the opening whistle, South Africa imposed their trademark physicality, dominating the collisions and set pieces while adding a sharper attacking edge. The Barbarians, known for their free-flowing rugby, created several threats but struggled to match the world champions’ intensity and defensive organisation.
The Springboks opened the scoring through a well-worked try before adding further points through a combination of powerful forward play and clinical finishing out wide. Their dominance at scrum time and breakdowns provided a steady platform, allowing the backs to exploit space and keep the Barbarians under constant pressure.
While the Barbarians showed flashes of brilliance and scored tries of their own, the Springboks remained firmly in control. Their disciplined defence quickly shut down any hopes of a comeback.
The result will please head coach Rassie Erasmus, as several players boosted their chances of future selection. For the Springboks, it was a composed performance that highlighted their depth and quality ahead of a demanding international schedule.
