SENSATIONAL SOUTH AFRICA

South Africa produced one of the greatest moments in its football history, earning a hard-fought 1-0 win over Korea Republic to reach the FIFA World Cup knockout stages for the first time.

Thapelo Maseko’s 63rd-minute goal decided the Group A showdown in Monterrey, triggering jubilant celebrations from Bafana Bafana players and supporters.

After a difficult start to the tournament, Hugo Broos’ side showed tremendous resilience and tactical discipline. Korea Republic enjoyed large spells of possession and attempted to increase the tempo after the introduction of captain Son Heung-min, but South Africa’s defence stood firm. Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams and his backline produced a composed display, while Aubrey Modiba made a crucial goal-line clearance to preserve the lead.

The victory saw Bafana Bafana finish second in Group A behind Mexico and complete a remarkable turnaround after opening the tournament with defeat.

South Africa will face co-hosts Canada in the Round of 32 on Sunday, as Broos’ side aims to extend its dream run and make more history on football’s biggest stage.
