Sekhukhune United Part Ways with Coach Eric Tinkler –
Paulus Masehe to Take Charge
APRIL 13
Sekhukhune United has confirmed that they have parted ways with head coach Eric Tinkler, with assistant coach Paulus Masehe, replacing Lehlohonolo Seema, and guided Babina Noko to a strong fourth-place finish, building on the foundation laid by his predecessor. The campaign raised expectations internally, with management setting a clear target for the
current season: secure a top-three finish and challenge for silverware in one of the domestic competitions.
Inconsistent Form and Missed Opportunities
Those competitions included the MTN8, Carling Knockout, or the Nedbank Cup, objectives Tinkler publicly acknowledged at the start of the season.
Despite early promise, Sekhukhune United were unable to secure any trophies, and their league form became inconsistent in recent weeks. Although still mathematically in contention for a top-three finish in the Betway Premiership, the task grew increasingly difficult with just six matches remaining.
Tinkler’s final match in charge ended in a 1-0 victory over Magesi FC this past weekend. However, the win followed a five-match winless run in the league – a slump that ultimately cost him the confidence of club management.
Cup Exit Adds Pressure
With several traditional heavyweights eliminated early from the Nedbank Cup, Sekhukhune United appeared well-positioned to mount a serious challenge for silverware. However, their hopes were ended in the quarter-finals by Milford FC – a result that intensified scrutiny on the technical team and accelerated decision-making.
Club Restructure and Next Steps
The coaching change comes amid a broader restructuring of football operations at the club. Walter Steenbok was recently appointed Director of Football Strategy, working alongside Sporting Director McDonald Makubedi.
Paulus Masehe will oversee the team for the remaining fixtures, while assistant coach Mark van Heerden has also been relieved of his duties. The club is expected to begin identifying a permanent head coach in the coming weeks.
