PSG RETAIN UEFA SUPER CUP

Paris Saint-Germain underlined their status as Europe’s dominant force after defeating Aston Villa 2-1 in a thrilling UEFA Super Cup final in Salzburg on Wednesday night.

PSG took control in the 20th minute when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia produced a brilliant individual effort, cutting through Villa’s defence before firing an unstoppable shot into the net.

Villa refused to buckle, however, and 17-year-old Brian Madjo levelled just before half-time with a superb volley, becoming the youngest scorer in UEFA Super Cup history.

The French giants regained the lead in the 61st minute through Désiré Doué, who raced onto Ousmane Dembélé’s pass before curling a superb finish into the far corner. VAR confirmed the goal after an initial offside decision.

Villa pushed desperately for an equaliser late on, but PSG’s defence held firm to secure another major trophy for Luis Enrique.

The victory also saw PSG become only the third club, after Real Madrid and AC Milan, to retain the Super Cup.
