The 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix delivered a dramatic finish as McLaren’s Lando Norris claimed his first victory of the Formula 1 season with a composed drive at the Hungaroring.

Starting from pole position, Norris overcame fierce pressure from Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Mercedes championship leader Kimi Antonelli to secure a crucial win heading into the summer break.

The race took a decisive turn when Oscar Piastri, who had looked capable of challenging for victory, retired following contact with Carlos Sainz. The incident brought out a Virtual Safety Car, creating a strategic battle that worked in Norris’ favour.

Verstappen finished second after an aggressive late charge, while Antonelli completed the podium to maintain his lead in the drivers’ championship.

Ferrari endured a frustrating afternoon despite showing promising pace. Charles Leclerc finished fourth, while Lewis Hamilton crossed the line fifth after questioning the team’s strategy and receiving a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane.

Norris’ victory ended McLaren’s winless run and injected fresh life into both championship battles as Formula 1 heads into its mid-season break with momentum firmly back on the Woking-based outfit’s side.
