Defending champions Argentina staged one of the greatest comebacks of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, beating Egypt 3-2 in a thrilling Round of 16 clash on Tuesday to reach the quarterfinals.

Egypt stunned the South Americans by racing into a 2-0 lead through Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Zico, while Lionel Messi also saw an early penalty saved as Argentina looked on the brink of a shock elimination.

With just over 10 minutes remaining, Argentina mounted a remarkable fightback. Cristian Romero pulled one back in the 79th minute before Messi redeemed himself with a superb equaliser four minutes later. Enzo Fernández then completed the incredible turnaround with a stoppage-time winner, sending the reigning champions into the last eight.

The dramatic victory keeps Argentina’s dream of retaining the World Cup alive, while Egypt exit the tournament with pride after their historic run to the knockout stages pushed the holders to the very limit. Argentina will now face Switzerland in the quarterfinals.
