Manqoba Mngqithi Starts Young Africans Reign With Community Shield Triumph
Former Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows head coach Manqoba Mngqithi has made a dream start to life in Tanzania after guiding Young Africans SC (Yanga) to victory over Simba SC in the Tanzanian Community Shield.
Mngqithi’s side secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over fellow South African coach Steve Barker’s Simba at the New Amaan Complex in Zanzibar on Wednesday, August 12. The result saw Yanga retain the Community Shield for a second consecutive year.
Mngqithi Gets the Better of Barker
The fixture carried an added South African flavour, with Mngqithi and Barker going head-to-head in one of Tanzania’s biggest football rivalries.
Both coaches had been preparing their teams for a fiercely contested Kariakoo Derby, with Barker looking to start his tenure at Simba with silverware, while Mngqithi was aiming to make an immediate impact following his move to Yanga.
It was Mngqithi who ultimately walked away celebrating.
Young Africans found the breakthrough in the 31st minute when Albert Kangwanda scored the only goal of the match, giving Yanga a lead they would protect until the final whistle.
First Trophy Abroad for Mngqithi
The victory marks Mngqithi’s first piece of silverware outside South Africa, adding an important early achievement to his new chapter in Tanzania.
After spending much of his coaching career in South Africa, including a lengthy association with Mamelodi Sundowns, Mngqithi’s move to Young Africans represents a new challenge in one of East Africa’s most competitive football environments.
Rather than needing time to settle in, the 54-year-old has immediately delivered a trophy.
Yanga Continue Their Dominance
The Community Shield victory also underlines Young Africans’ recent dominance in the fixture.
Yanga defeated Simba in the previous Community Shield meeting as well, making this their second consecutive triumph over their arch-rivals in the competition.
For Simba, meanwhile, the defeat will be a frustrating start to Barker’s competitive reign. The former Stellenbosch FC coach had previously spoken about the importance of beginning the season with silverware, but his first competitive encounter against Mngqithi ended in disappointment.
A Statement Start
There will inevitably be plenty of football still to be played before any conclusions can be drawn about Mngqithi’s tenure at Young Africans.
But winning a trophy against one of the club’s biggest rivals in his first competitive match is about as strong a start as the South African coach could have hoped for.
For Mngqithi, the message is clear: the Tanzanian adventure has begun with silverware.
And with the battle between Yanga and Simba set to continue throughout the season, the rivalry between Mngqithi and Barker could become one of the most intriguing coaching storylines in Tanzanian football.
