Hugo Broos has officially parted ways with the South African Football Association (SAFA), bringing an end to his five-year tenure as Bafana Bafana head coach.

The Belgian’s departure comes after he guided South Africa to the knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup for the first time in the country’s history.

Broos was appointed in 2021 and departs as South Africa’s longest-serving coach, having made the national team more competitive. His standout achievement came at the World Cup, where Bafana reached the knockout stage before being eliminated by Canada.

The 74-year-old had previously indicated that he would not continue as head coach after the tournament, although there had been discussions about potentially retaining him in another advisory capacity.

SAFA has now confirmed his departure, bringing closure to weeks of uncertainty surrounding his future.

Attention will immediately turn to finding Broos’ successor, with the next appointment carrying the responsibility of building on the historic progress achieved during his tenure.
