Argentina booked their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-finals with an impressive 3-1 extra-time victory over a resilient Switzerland in Kansas City on Saturday.
Argentina were pushed hard by a disciplined Swiss side, but their superior quality prevailed, keeping their title defence alive.
Alexis Mac Allister opened the scoring early in the contest with a well-placed header, giving Argentina the perfect start. Switzerland refused to back down and deservedly levelled through Dan Ndoye after the break, setting up a tense finish as both sides searched for a winner. The deadlock remained after 90 minutes, forcing the match into extra time.
The turning point came when Switzerland were reduced to ten men, allowing Argentina to take control. Julián Álvarez then delivered a moment of brilliance with a stunning long-range strike, before Lautaro Martínez added a late goal to secure the win and send Argentina into the last four. Although Lionel Messi did not add to his tournament tally, his leadership and creativity remained influential throughout.
Argentina will now face England in a highly anticipated semi-final as they continue their bid to retain the FIFA World Cup crown.
