Namibian striker Peter Shalulile has officially made history in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) by equalling Siyabonga Nomvethe’s long-standing record of 129 career goals, the highest since the league’s inception in 1996.
Mamelodi Sundowns faced Magesi FC in the third round of the new PSL campaign, and it was Shalulile who sealed the 2-0 victory. His stunning strike from just outside the box in the 87th minute not only secured the win for the Brazilians but also etched his name into the record books.
That goal marked Shalulile’s 102nd for Sundowns, adding to the 27 goals he scored at Highlands Park before joining the Tshwane giants. With this, he has drawn level with PSL legend Siyabonga Nomvethe, who had held the all-time scoring record for years.
After the match, Shalulile humbly shared his mindset:
“My goal is to score in every game. I’m confident the goals will come, and I’m looking forward to my first full season as a starter. I don’t like to talk too much about the top scorer title, but I’m sure everything will work out just fine.”
This determination has been the driving force behind his consistency and success in front of goal.
The win pushed Sundowns to 7 points, placing them third on the log behind Sekhukhune United and Kaizer Chiefs, who both sit at the top with 9 points each.
All eyes will be on Shalulile this coming weekend when Sundowns face Orlando Pirates in the second leg of the MTN Cup semi-final. The Namibian forward has the perfect opportunity to not only secure a spot in the final but also to break the PSL all-time goal-scoring record.
At just 31 years old, Peter Shalulile still has several years of football left if he stays fit. Whether he scores this weekend or later in the season, it seems inevitable that he will surpass Nomvethe and stand alone as the greatest goal scorer in PSL history.
