A new chapter in Aden McCarthy’s European journey has just reached a historic milestone.

The former Kaizer Chiefs defender and South African star is heading to the UEFA Champions League league phase after Sabah FK produced an incredible comeback against Hapoel Be’er Sheva.

Sabah overturned a first-leg deficit in dramatic fashion, winning 5-2 after extra time to secure a remarkable 6-4 aggregate victory and book their place among Europe’s elite.

From Naturena to the Champions League

For McCarthy, the achievement represents another huge step in what has been a rapid rise.

The 22-year-old came through the Kaizer Chiefs development system before breaking into the Amakhosi senior team. During his first full senior campaign in 2025/26, the versatile defender made 33 appearances across all competitions, scoring twice and helping Chiefs finish third in the Betway Premiership.

His performances earned him a move to Azerbaijan champions Sabah FK in June, with Chiefs Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr expressing pride that McCarthy would get the opportunity to compete in the UEFA Champions League.

Now, just months after leaving South Africa, McCarthy has gone one step further.

A dramatic night in Europe

Sabah faced a major challenge after losing the first leg 2-1.

The second leg looked to be slipping away when Hapoel Be’er Sheva restored their aggregate advantage in the second half. But Sabah refused to surrender.

A late equaliser forced extra time before the Azerbaijani side exploded into life, scoring three times in extra time to complete a stunning 5-2 victory.

McCarthy was introduced in the 91st minute, playing his part as Sabah completed one of the biggest nights in the club’s history.

Flying the South African flag

McCarthy’s achievement is particularly significant for South African football.

The young defender has gone from developing at Naturena to preparing for football’s biggest club competition in Europe. His progress has also been praised by former Kaizer Chiefs teammate Inacio Miguel, who described McCarthy as an example for young South African players looking to make the jump to European football.

And there is an added family connection. McCarthy is the son of former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana defender Fabian McCarthy, meaning the family name will now be represented on one of the biggest stages in world football.
