The 2026/27 Premier League season has exploded into life, with the opening weekend delivering shocks, statement victories and plenty of early questions for England’s biggest clubs.

The Champions, Arsenal, laid down their marker with a comfortable 3-0 Friday night win over Coventry City at the Emirates. The newly promoted boys looked way too inferior so maybe another test for the Gunners will be a true testament of what we can expect from them as they go on their quest to retain their crown.

Manchester United suffered the biggest upset, going down 2-0 away to newly promoted Hull City. It was a nightmare start for Michael Carrick’s side, while Hull announced their return to the topflight in spectacular fashion. Fellow newcomers Ipswich Town also celebrated victory, beating Sunderland 2-1 with a dramatic late winner.

Everton started well with a 2-0 win over the Eagles, while Leeds gave Forest owner Marinakis something to ponder in the early stages of the new campaign.

Tottenham endured an equally painful afternoon, thrashed 3-0 by Brentford, while Brighton produced arguably the weekend’s most emphatic performance by demolishing Aston Villa 4-0. Villa’s difficult rebuilding job under Unai Emery suddenly looks even tougher.

Manchester City needed a stoppage-time winner from Josko Gvardiol to escape Bournemouth with a 2-1 victory, giving new manager Enzo Maresca a winning league start. Liverpool, meanwhile, were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw at Newcastle after Dominik Szoboszlai’s 99th-minute penalty rescued a point for Andoni Iraola’s new-look side.

Chelsea then completed the opening round with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Fulham, giving Xabi Alonso a winning start. Joao Pedro scored after just 31 seconds, while Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer also found the net.

With seven of the opening ten matches producing home wins, the first weekend has already shown that this could be one of the most unpredictable Premier League seasons yet.
