XAVI TAKES CHARGE OF THE NETHERLANDS

Xavi Hernández has taken on a major new challenge after being named Netherlands head coach on a contract through the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

The 46-year-old Spaniard replaces Ronald Koeman, who stepped down after the Dutch side’s disappointing last-32 exit to Morocco at this summer’s World Cup.

The appointment marks Xavi’s return to management after leaving Barcelona in 2024. During his time at Camp Nou, he guided the Catalan giants to the La Liga title in 2023 and established a reputation for possession-based, attacking football.

Xavi’s arrival is particularly intriguing given the Netherlands’ historic influence on his football philosophy. The former Barcelona midfielder has credited Dutch legends such as Johan Cruyff, Louis van Gaal and Rinus Michels for shaping his approach to the game.

He becomes the Netherlands’ first foreign head coach since Austria’s Ernst Happel in 1978.

Xavi’s first major test will come in the Nations League, with his debut scheduled against Germany on September 24.

The Dutch will hope their new Spanish boss can blend his Barcelona-inspired style with the famous traditions of Total Football.
