Joe Root has been named England’s new Test captain, returning to the role as the England and Wales Cricket Board places its trust in one of the country’s most accomplished batters.

Root, who previously captained England between 2017 and 2022, succeeds the outgoing skipper with the aim of guiding the team through a crucial period in the international calendar.

The 35-year-old brings a wealth of experience, having led England in more than 60 Test matches while establishing himself as one of the finest batters of his generation. His calm approach, tactical awareness and vast knowledge of the longest format were key factors behind the ECB’s decision.

Speaking after the announcement, Root said it was a “privilege” to captain England once again and vowed to build a team capable of competing with the world’s best.
