MEXICO HUMBLE SOUTH AFRICANS

Bafana Bafana made a disappointing start to South Africa’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, losing 2-0 to hosts Mexico in the tournament opener at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

Backed by an enthusiastic home crowd, Mexico took early control and went ahead when Julian Quiñones capitalised on a defensive error. Raul Jiménez then sealed the win in the second half with a powerful header.

South Africa’s task became even harder when midfielder Sphephelo Sithole was sent off soon after half-time. Veteran playmaker Themba Zwane later received a red card, reducing Hugo Broos’ side to nine men. Mexico defender César Montes was also dismissed in stoppage time, bringing the total to three red cards in a fiery match.

The result leaves Bafana Bafana with work to do in Group A, with upcoming fixtures now carrying added importance if they are to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stages alive. For Mexico, meanwhile, it was the perfect start to their home World Cup as they celebrated a historic opening-match victory.
