Durban City Crowned 2026 Nedbank Cup Champions After Dramatic 2-1 Comeback Win Over TS Galaxy

Durban City secured their first-ever Nedbank Cup title with a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory against TS Galaxy at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday evening.

Slow Start but Early Warning Signs

Durban City, also known as the Team of Choice, made two changes to their lineup following their previous clash against Orbit College. Captain Siphamandla Ncanana and Trevor Mokwena returned to the starting XI, while TS Galaxy stuck with the same squad that played out a goalless draw against Magesi FC.

The KwaZulu-Natal side nearly opened the scoring early on when Jean Lwamba connected with a powerful header, but his effort drifted wide. Despite dominating possession, City were briefly exposed by a misplaced pass, giving Galaxy a scoring opportunity that was ultimately denied by solid defensive recovery.

TS Galaxy Take the Lead Before Halftime

TS Galaxy began to grow into the game, with Victor Letsoalo missing a crucial chance midway through the first half after shooting wide from close range. However, the breakthrough came just before halftime in unusual fashion, as Lwamba turned the ball into his own net during a goalmouth scramble, handing Galaxy a 1-0 lead.

Second-Half Turnaround Sparks Durban City Comeback

Durban City responded decisively after the break, introducing Luphumlo Sifumba in place of Haashim Domingo. The substitution injected energy into their attack, and it paid off in the 55th minute.

Mfanafuthi Mkhize timed his run perfectly to meet a low cross from Lwamba, finishing calmly at the far post to level the score at 1-1.

Late Winner Seals Historic Victory

With momentum on their side, Durban City pushed forward and found the winning goal in the final 20 minutes. Lubumba struck a powerful effort from the edge of the box, which took a slight deflection off the post and beat the goalkeeper to make it 2-1.

TS Galaxy attempted a late comeback, with Igor Silva coming close from a set-piece, but goalkeeper Darren Keet made a comfortable save to preserve the lead.

Durban City Make History

Despite late pressure from TS Galaxy, Durban City held firm to secure a historic victory and lift their first Nedbank Cup trophy. The win marks a major milestone for the club and solidifies their place in South African football history.
