PROTEAS SECURE BITTERSWEET WIN IN T20 SERIES OPENER
South Africa made an impressive start to their T20 series against New Zealand with a convincing seven-wicket victory in the first match at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on Sunday. The Proteas delivered a dominant all-round performance, led by an outstanding bowling display that dismantled the hosts’ batting lineup.
After winning the toss, New Zealand chose to bat first but quickly found themselves under pressure from South Africa’s disciplined seam attack. The Proteas bowlers struck early and repeatedly, reducing the home side to 36 for 5 inside the powerplay. The early collapse left New Zealand struggling to rebuild their innings on a pitch that aided both pace and spin.
Teenage fast bowler Nqobani Mokoena was the standout performer with the ball, taking 3 wickets for 26 runs and earning praise for his composure on debut. He was well supported by Gerald Coetzee and Ottneil Baartman, who each claimed two wickets, while spinner Keshav Maharaj also chipped in with key breakthroughs. Despite a fighting 26 from all-rounder Jimmy Neesham, New Zealand were bowled out for just 91 in 14.3 overs, one of their lowest totals in T20 international cricket.
Chasing a modest target of 92, South Africa approached the run chase cautiously but remained in control throughout the innings. Opener Connor Esterhuizen anchored the chase with a composed unbeaten 45, guiding the Proteas steadily towards the target. Although New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner bowled economically and picked up a wicket, the hosts did not have enough runs on the board to seriously challenge the visitors.
South Africa eventually reached 93 for 3 in 16.4 overs, sealing victory with 20 balls to spare and taking a 1–0 lead in the five-match series. The emphatic win highlighted the strength of South Africa’s bowling attack and marked a promising start to their tour of New Zealand.
Game 2 is on the Tuesday (17 March)
